Simama Ngidi — Actuarial Honours Student, Aspiring Actuary
Open to 2027 graduate programmes

Eight ASSA exemptions secured, three more anticipated this year.

I am completing my BSc Honours in Actuarial Science at the University of the Witwatersrand and am looking for a 2027 graduate programme.

My interests cover insurance and reinsurance as well as banking, investments and consulting. Every one of them has to put a price on something uncertain, decide how much capital to hold against it, and explain that decision to people who need to act on it. That is the work I want to do, and the work my degree, exemptions and research have prepared me for.

Took first place on the profit leaderboard at an insurer's actuarial hackathon: a time-boxed pricing brief scored on underwriting result rather than on presentation.

Tutor · University of the Witwatersrand

Tutoring undergraduate actuarial and statistics students. Explaining a result to someone who has not yet met the theory is the same skill as explaining a model's output to a colleague outside the technical team.

A vacation placement with a Durban manufacturing group — commercial exposure outside financial services, and a first look at how operational risk shows up in an operating business rather than in a model.

Research

Pricing Real Estate Using Machine Learning & Time Series Models
Honours project

Machine learning prices property well but treats every transaction as independent, discarding the market cycles and persistence that housing markets are built on. This study tests whether a hybrid framework fixes that: four models — multiple linear regression, random forest, support vector machine and gradient boosting — fitted to twenty years of one-family dwelling transactions in Brooklyn, New York City, then paired with an ARIMA model applied to their residuals.

Hybridisation improved every model. Prediction error fell by roughly 35% and average R² rose from 0.37 to 0.63, with Diebold–Mariano tests confirming the gains were statistically significant. The residuals carry real temporal information that the machine learning models threw away — and the same logic applies wherever cross-sectional risk factors and shifting market conditions both drive the answer, premium rating included.
